Privacy
FocusDen counts visits to its listening pages, anonymously, to learn what works. It records how someone uses those pages only when a signed-in listener turns recording on. You can stop either from this page.
- Visit counts
- Anonymous. No cookies. On for everyone unless you object. Counting is on now.
- Session recordings
- Off unless you turn them on. Never for guests. Available now to signed-in listeners who choose it.
- Audio checks
- Your file stays private and is never published unless you ask. How long it is kept.
- Questions
- Send us a private request, without signing in.
Visit counts
When you open a listening page, FocusDen notes which kind of page it was, so we can see which parts of the room people use and fix what isn’t working. The count goes to Umami, an analytics tool we run ourselves on our servers in Germany. No analytics or advertising company receives it.
What a count holds
- The kind of page, such as Explore or a mix page. Never search words, links or anything you type.
- Browser, operating system, device type, screen size and language.
- Approximate location (country, region and city), worked out from your IP address. The IP address itself is not stored.
No visit-counting cookie or persistent identifier is stored on your device. Visits from the same browser and network in the same month are grouped as one anonymous visitor; the grouping starts again each month. These pageview counts exclude the landing page, Settings, sign-in pages and creator tools.
Links to FocusDen
When you arrive through one of our tagged social, playlist or newsletter links, we also count that campaign’s landings, observed playback starts, five-minute listens and completed audio assessments. This includes tagged arrivals on the landing page and assessment tool. We keep only approved campaign labels, not arbitrary URL text or search terms.
A random code stays in this tab’s memory for up to 30 minutes. If you submit an assessment, we temporarily connect that code to its job so we can count a completed report. That link is removed on completion, withdrawal or expiry, within 24 hours. Daily campaign totals are kept for 180 days in FocusDen’s own database, without names, emails or recording titles. The stop-counting control below and Global Privacy Control apply to this measurement too.
How long we keep it
Anonymous counts are kept as statistics. They can’t be traced to you, so we can’t find or delete one person’s counts.
Stop counting
Browsers that send Global Privacy Control are never counted. Stopping counts also stops any session recording in this browser.
Session recordings
A session recording replays how one person used the listening pages: where they clicked, scrolled and pressed play. It helps us find problems you’d otherwise have to describe. It is off unless you are signed in and turn it on, and saying no changes nothing else about FocusDen.
What is recorded, and what is hidden
- Only these pages, in a web browser: Home, Now playing, Explore, My library, Creators, creator profiles and mix pages. Never in the phone apps.
- Text is hidden by default. Mix titles, creator names and navigation stay readable; anything you type, search words, emails and private codes never do.
- Sign-in and password pages, Settings, your account panel, invitations, creator tools and this page are never recorded. Recording stops as soon as you leave the listening pages.
- Each recording lasts at most 30 minutes; the next page starts a new one.
How a recording is linked to you
Turning recording on gives your account a new random recording ID. Recordings, and the visit details collected while recording is on, are stored in Umami under that ID, never under your name or email. FocusDen’s own database links the ID to your account, so the founder can find your recordings by your email when you report a problem. Each such search is logged. Only the founder can watch recordings, in a private dashboard that isn’t reachable from the public internet.
How long we keep it
Recordings, and the visit details linked to your recording ID, are deleted after 30 days. When you turn recording off or delete your account, recording stops at once and we start deleting your earlier recordings; this normally finishes within minutes. Server backups made before then can hold a copy until those backups are replaced.
Checking your recording choice…
Audio assessments
You can check an audio file on the Assess audio page, with or without an account. The check runs on our own servers in Germany. Your audio is not sent to an outside AI or analytics service, and it is never published unless you ask and we approve it.
What we store
- The file you upload, unchanged, with its name, size and a fingerprint.
- The report, and any feedback you give on its moments.
- Your confirmation that you may provide the audio, with the wording you agreed to and when.
Without an account
Your browser keeps a random key in a cookie that only the assessment requests carry. It is how FocusDen knows the assessments are yours; it is never used to count or follow you. We store only a one-way scrambled form of the key, and of your network address to limit misuse.
A guest file is deleted 7 days after its check finishes, and the report 30 days after you start it. A private return link opens them in another browser until then; anyone with the link can open them. Making a new link ends the old one and signs out every other browser that used it. You can delete all of them at once from the Assess audio page. If you create an account, you choose whether to move them into it.
With an account
Reports stay until you remove them or delete your account, and they are included in the data download in Settings. The Assess audio page shows how long your original files are kept.
Publication requests
If you ask FocusDen to publish a file, we keep the request: the credit and title you give, your note, your rights and consent confirmations with their wording versions, and the file. The file is kept for up to 90 days while the request is open, even past its usual deletion date. A guest gives an email address so we can reply; we use it only for that. It is removed when you withdraw the request, delete your guest assessments, or move them into an account (we then reply to the account email), and otherwise when the guest record ends. The founder reads the request and listens to the file. Withdrawing the request ends the hold.
Why we’re allowed to do this
Visit counts rely on our legitimate interest in understanding how the listening room is used so we can improve it. We keep them anonymous and minimal. UK law lets a service collect statistics like these without asking first, as long as it explains them clearly and gives a free, simple way to object, which is the choice above.
Session recordings rely only on your consent. A recording follows one person’s visit, so it is never treated as a legitimate interest, and you can withdraw your consent at any time.
Audio checks and publication requests rely on providing the service you ask for. The guest cookie is strictly necessary for that service, so it needs no separate consent.
Requests you send us are used only to answer you. The law requires us to respond to requests about your information.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of the information we hold about you, and ask us to correct it, delete it, limit how we use it or stop using it. You can withdraw consent at any time without affecting anything else. Use the choices on this page or in Settings, or send us a request. We reply within one month.
Settings also lets you clear your listening history and delete your account. Deleting your account deletes its recordings too.
If you’re unhappy with how we handle your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
